FACT #4: Children Orphaned by AIDS

Posted on December 1, 2011

One of the biggest effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is on a country’s social fabric due to the number of children that have been orphaned as a result of AIDS.

To date, 16.6 million children around the world have lost their parents due to HIV. Around 14.8 million of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa.

In Zimbabwe, 16% of all children and 12% in Botswana and Swaziland, are orphaned due to AIDS.

The loss of a parent to AIDS can have serious consequences for a child’s access to basic necessities such as shelter, food, clothing, health and education.

Today is World AIDS day.
