HIV is Still Here

Posted on November 24, 2011

Today is the first day of HIV awareness week held each year from 24 November to 1 December, ending with World AIDS Day on 1 December.   The theme for World AIDS Day 2011 is ‘HIV is still here’.  2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the first reported case of AIDS and the 20th anniversary of the first public wearing of the red ribbon (by actor Jeremy Irons).

In Australia, World AIDS Day aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and transmission of HIV and to encourage Australians to accept and support people living with HIV and AIDS.

Recently, GOOD posted an article on Dr. Edward Atwater’s collection of AIDS education posters spanning 30 years.  Over 6200 posters from over 100 countries in over 60 languages, now public at the University of Rochester through an online exhibit, offer a global perspective of the 30 year AIDS epidemic.   “It’s interesting to see how different cultures and different societies address the subject—a fatal disease transmitted through the closeted subject of sex,” Atwater said.

Check them out here and don’t forget to wear a red ribbon next Thursday.
