Runway for a Reason

Posted on November 21, 2011

Violence against women is a universal problem. However, it is far worse in developing countries where women have a much lower social status than men. From a health perspective, violence against women can lead to several adverse long-term effects ranging from psychological trauma, gynaecological disorders, unwanted pregnancies, premature labour and birth and increase in sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.[1]

Runway for a Reason is A Young UN Women and Perth Rotaract Fashion Fundraiser raising money to build a girl’s school in Uganda through Hope Uganda and to implement anti-violence programs in the Pacific through the Pacific Facility Fund. Such anti-violence programs empower women by helping them to understand their rights and the services available to them as victims of gender-based violence. Several designers will be on showcase including Bhalo, a Perth-based ethical fashion label that works with women in Bangladesh to create handmade garments.
